Floreana: A Woman’s Pilgrimage to the Galapagos by Margret Wittmer

Floreana is a fascinating memoir that was first published in Germany in 1959.

I read this memoir many years ago and have lent it out to many friends and relatives. It led to my love of memoirs.

Margret Wittmer was one of the original settlers of Floreana Island located in the Galapagos. Wittmer, her husband Heinz, and her stepson Harry moved to Floreana Island in 1932, following the arrival of German doctor Friedrich Ritter and his wife, Dore Strauch. Wittmer was in the fourth month of her first pregnancy, and she gave birth to a son and a daughter while living on the island.

There is a new movie based on this book titled EDEN which will be released in the US in August 2025. Sydney Sweeney plays Margret Wittmer.
